About the Inspector Van Veeteren series

Håkan Nesser's Van Veeteren novels are intelligent, melancholy Scandinavian crime fiction set in an unnamed, deliberately ambiguous northern European country. Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is a brooding, chess-playing, philosophically inclined detective who solves cases through patience and intuition more than forensics.

Nesser writes spare, atmospheric mysteries preoccupied with chance, guilt and the unknowability of others. Van Veeteren's dry wit and existential gloom set him apart, and the placeless setting gives the books a timeless, fable-like quality.

The series is best read in order from "The Mind's Eye," as Van Veeteren's career and life evolve.
