Hakan Nesser (born February 21, 1950) is a Swedish author and retired professor of literature. He is best known for his intricate and atmospheric crime novels, particularly the series featuring Inspector Van Veeteren. Born in Kumla, Sweden, Nesser graduated from Uppsala University with a degree in literature and history. After a brief teaching career, he began writing full-time in the 1980s. His first novel, "Koreografen" (The Choreographer), was published in 1988. Nesser's Inspector Van Veeteren series, set in the fictional Swedish town of Kymlinge, has been widely acclaimed for its psychological depth, complex characters, and sophisticated plotting. The series has been translated into over 20 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. Nesser has received numerous awards for his work, including the Swedish Crime Academy Award for Best Swedish Crime Novel in 1993, 1996, and 2004. He has also been shortlisted for the British Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award and the CWA International Dagger Award.
