Steven Saylor (born March 23, 1956) is an American historical mystery novelist best known for his acclaimed Roma sub Rosa series. Set in the late Roman Republic, the series follows the adventures of Gordianus the Finder, a private investigator in ancient Rome. Saylor's novels are lauded for their meticulous historical research, vivid settings, and engaging plots. He was born in Austin, Texas, and developed a fascination with ancient Rome at a young age. Saylor earned a J.D. from the University of Texas Law School in 1981 and worked as a lawyer for several years before turning to writing full-time. His debut novel, Roman Blood (1991), won the Herodotus Award for Best Historical Mystery. Since then, he has published over 30 novels, including "Empire" (2007), which won the Nero Wolfe Award, and "The Throne of Caesar" (2019), his latest installment in the Gordianus series. His work has been translated into over 20 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide.
