About the Witcher series

Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher saga is the Polish fantasy series that spawned the blockbuster games and Netflix show. Geralt of Rivia is a witcher — a mutated, monster-hunting swordsman for hire — navigating a morally murky world where the real monsters are often human. His bond with the prophecy-touched girl Ciri and the sorceress Yennefer forms the saga's beating heart.

Sapkowski's writing is witty, philosophical and subversive, twisting fairy-tale and Slavic folklore into something darker and more political. The series balances standalone monster-hunting adventures with a sweeping war-torn arc.

The recommended order starts with the two short-story collections ("The Last Wish" then "Sword of Destiny"), which introduce Geralt and set up the novels. The main five-book saga then runs from "Blood of Elves" to "The Lady of the Lake." Read the stories first — the novels assume you know them.
