Born in Essex, England, he studied English at the University of Leicester and taught literature before pursuing writing full-time. Barnard published over 100 novels, many featuring his recurring character Detective Constable Charlie Resnick of the Metropolitan Police. His intricate plots and witty style earned him comparisons to Agatha Christie. Notable works include the CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning "Death of a Mystery Writer" (1987) and "Death in a Strange Country" (1986).
