Anne Inez McCaffrey (1926-2011) was an Irish-American science fiction and fantasy author best known for the Dragonriders of Pern series. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she lived in Ireland from age 12 to 23, where she developed a deep love for horses and the countryside, which would later influence her writing. McCaffrey's writing career began in the 1950s, and in 1968 she published "Dragonflight," the first novel in the Pern series.
