James Oswald is a British author best known for his Inspector McLean crime novels set in the Scottish Highlands. Born in 1969, he grew up in Fife and worked as a journalist before becoming a full-time writer in 2001. Oswald's debut novel, "Natural Causes," was published in 2001 and introduced Detective Inspector Tony McLean. The series has since grown to include 16 books, with the latest, "The Iron Cage," released in 2023. Oswald's writing is praised for its atmospheric settings, well-developed characters, and gripping plots. His novels have won numerous awards, including the Scottish Crime Book of the Year twice (in 2004 and 2022) and the CWA Dagger in the Library Award in 2018. Oswald has also been shortlisted for the prestigious Edgar Award and Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. His books have been translated into 25 languages and have sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
