Born in New York City, she graduated from Barnard College and began her career as an editor at Golden Books. Hechtman's notable works include the "Freaky Friday" series, which introduced the body-swap concept in children's literature. Hechtman's critical success earned her the American Library Association Notable Children's Book Award for "Freaky Friday" in 1973.
