Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series effectively invented the modern techno-thriller. Ryan begins as a mild-mannered CIA analyst and, across the books, rises through escalating crises all the way to the U.S. presidency, with Clancy's signature obsession with military hardware, intelligence tradecraft and geopolitical brinkmanship driving every page.

The appeal is authority and scale: meticulously researched submarines, aircraft and agencies, plotted against Cold War and post-Cold War flashpoints that feel ripped from classified briefings. "The Hunt for Red October" launched the phenomenon and remains the perfect entry point.

There is a reading-order quirk — the books were published out of chronological sequence, and Ryan's career can be followed either by publication or by in-world timeline. Most readers simply start with "Red October" and follow publication order; the series has since been continued by other authors.
