John Michael Scalzi II (born May 10, 1969) is an American science fiction author. Scalzi started writing as a hobby in the late 1990s while working as a corporate marketing manager. His first novel, "Old Man's War" (2005), won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Since then, he has published numerous novels, including the Hugo Award-winning "Redshirts" (2012) and "The Collapsing Empire" (2017). His books have been translated into over 30 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Critical acclaim has lauded Scalzi's witty and thought-provoking writing, earning him the Robert A. Heinlein Award (2010) and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award (2013). He is also known for his popular blog, "Whatever," where he provides commentary on current events, pop culture, and writing.
