William Bernhardt (1918-2015) was an American sportswriter and novelist best known for his historical fiction. He began his journalism career in his teens and became a reporter for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1938. Bernhardt later served as a war correspondent during World War II. After the war, Bernhardt turned to writing fiction. His debut novel, "The Scar," was a critical success and won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He went on to write over 40 novels, most of which were set in the 19th century. His work is known for its vivid characters, rich historical detail, and explorations of American history. Bernhardt received numerous awards for his writing, including the National Book Award for Fiction in 1965 for "The Fourteen." In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, he also won the O. Henry Award for Best Short Story in 1946 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970.
