David Downing (born 1946) is a British-American author known for his historical fiction and mystery novels. Born in Liverpool, England, Downing emigrated to the United States in the 1970s. He initially worked as a lawyer before becoming a full-time writer. Downing's most notable work is his series of crime novels featuring British detective John Russell. Set primarily in Germany during and after World War II, these novels blend mystery with historical events. Downing has also written several stand-alone historical novels. His work has received critical acclaim for its vivid historical detail, well-developed characters, and gripping plots. Downing has won numerous awards, including the CWA Gold Dagger Award (1989) for "No More Dying Then" and the John Creasey Memorial Award (2005) for his entire body of work.
