Realm of the Elderlings Reading Order: Robin Hobb's Complete Saga

Spoiler warning

Discussing the differences between books and their adaptations may reveal plot points for both.

Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings is regularly named among the finest works in all of fantasy — a sixteen-book saga of extraordinary emotional depth, built around one of the genre’s most beloved (and most put-upon) characters, FitzChivalry Farseer. It spans five connected sub-series, and the reading order is simply publication order.

“But Liveship doesn’t have Fitz in it?”

Correct — The Liveship Traders follows an entirely different cast in another part of the world. Many newcomers are tempted to skip it to get back to Fitz. Don’t. Liveship is some of Hobb’s best work, and crucially, it sets up people, places, and revelations that pay off enormously in later books. Read it in order.

Where to start

Assassin’s Apprentice. Be warned: Hobb is the master of making you love characters and then putting them through the wringer. The payoff across sixteen books — especially the gut-punch of the final trilogy — is one of the most rewarding journeys in fantasy.
