Mistborn Reading Order: Era 1, Era 2, and Where to Start
June 6, 2026
Discussing the differences between books and their adaptations may reveal plot points for both.
Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn is the best entry point into his vast Cosmere universe — a self-contained, brilliantly plotted magic-heist saga with one of the most satisfying hard-magic systems in fantasy. Here’s how to read it.
Era 1 — The Original Trilogy
- The Final Empire (2006)
- The Well of Ascension (2007)
- The Hero of Ages (2008)
A daring crew plots to overthrow an immortal god-emperor — and that’s just the beginning. This trilogy is a complete, stunning story with one of fantasy’s great twist endings. If you read nothing else, read these three.
Era 2 — The Wax and Wayne Series
- The Alloy of Law (2011)
- Shadows of Self (2015)
- The Bands of Mourning (2016)
- The Lost Metal (2022)
Set roughly 300 years later, as the world industrialises into a magical Wild West. Lighter, funnier, and full of Easter eggs for Era 1 readers — but still a great story in its own right.
Where to start
The Final Empire, always. The two eras are best read in order, and Era 1 sets up everything that makes Era 2 sing.
A note on the Cosmere
Mistborn is part of Sanderson’s interconnected Cosmere — the same universe as The Stormlight Archive, Warbreaker, and Elantris. You do not need to read those to enjoy Mistborn; the series stands completely on its own. But sharp-eyed readers will spot crossover characters (the Mistborn novella Mistborn: Secret History deepens these connections — save it until after The Hero of Ages, ideally after some other Cosmere reading).
The planned Era 3 and Era 4 will eventually continue the story, but Eras 1 and 2 are the complete experience for now.
The bottom line
Mistborn is the series most often recommended as the gateway to Sanderson and the Cosmere — tightly plotted, endlessly inventive, and approachable. Start with The Final Empire and see why he has the fanbase he does.
