Archer Mayor is an American author known for his crime fiction and historical novels. Born in 1945, he holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley. Mayor's most famous work is the Vermont-based Joe Gunther detective series. The first novel in the series, "Open Season," won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1997. He has also written standalone novels and historical fiction, including the American Revolution-themed "The Patriots." Mayor's writing has received critical acclaim for its vivid characters, intricate plots, and exploration of social issues. He has won numerous awards, including two Edgar Awards, the Anthony Award, and the Macavity Award. His work has been translated into over 20 languages.
