Andrea Camilleri (1925-2019) was an Italian writer, director, and screenwriter. Born in Porto Empedocle, Sicily, he initially worked as a teacher and civil servant. Camilleri began his literary career in 1978, but it was his series of detective novels featuring Inspector Montalbano, set in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàta, that brought him international recognition. These novels, characterized by their blend of crime, humor, and social commentary, have sold over 25 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 32 languages. Camilleri's works have received numerous awards, including the Premio Strega, Italy's most prestigious literary award (1999). His novels have also been adapted into successful television series, further enhancing his reputation as one of the most beloved authors of his generation.
