Patrick O'Brian (1914-2000) was an acclaimed British novelist, best known for his Aubrey-Maturin series of nautical historical novels. Born in England, he published his first novel at age 65. The Aubrey-Maturin series follows the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship's surgeon, Stephen Maturin, during the Napoleonic Wars. Set amidst the compelling backdrop of 19th-century naval warfare, the series is renowned for its rich characters, meticulous historical research, and gripping storytelling. O'Brian's works have garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995 and received the Kenyon Festival of Letters Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
