Phyllis Dorothy James, known by her pen name P. D. James, was a renowned British crime writer, poet, and dramatist. Born in 1920 in Oxford, James began her writing career while working as a civil servant for the National Health Service. Her breakthrough came in 1962 with the publication of her first novel, "Cover Her Face," featuring Detective Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh.
