About

J R R Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Born in South Africa, Tolkien spent most of his childhood in England. He studied English language and literature at Oxford University, where he became interested in mythology, philology, and linguistics. After serving in World War I, he taught at Oxford for most of his career. Tolkien's literary works are known for their rich world-building, complex characters, and exploration of themes such as good vs. evil, friendship, and sacrifice. The Hobbit, published in 1937, was an instant success and remains a popular children's book. The Lord of the Rings, published in three volumes from 1954 to 1955, has sold over 150 million copies worldwide and is considered one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written. Tolkien received numerous awards for his work, including the International Fantasy Award in 1956 and the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1972. His writings have had a profound impact on popular culture and continue to inspire generations of readers and writers.
