Vampire Academy and Bloodlines: Richelle Mead's Complete Reading Order
April 6, 2026
Discussing the differences between books and their adaptations may reveal plot points for both.
Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series introduced dhampir guardian Rose Hathaway and her world of Moroi vampires, Strigoi, and the brutal academy that trains guardians. The six-book spinoff series Bloodlines follows a different protagonist but is set in the same world with many of the same characters. Here’s the complete reading order.

Do You Need to Read Vampire Academy Before Bloodlines?
Yes, absolutely. Do not start Bloodlines without finishing Vampire Academy first.
Bloodlines begins immediately after the events of Last Sacrifice (VA Book 6). Sydney Sage, who appears in the final VA books as a secondary character, becomes the Bloodlines protagonist. Major events and character relationships from VA’s ending are part of Bloodlines’ opening context.
Starting Bloodlines first would spoil Last Sacrifice’s major resolutions and leave you missing significant emotional context.
Sydney Sage vs. Rose Hathaway
The shift in protagonist from Rose to Sydney changes the series’ register noticeably:
Rose (Vampire Academy) — impulsive, physically capable, driven by emotion and protective instinct. The VA books are fast and action-driven.
Sydney (Bloodlines) — analytical, cautious, morally conflicted. An Alchemist (a human who serves as a liaison between the vampire and human worlds), she’s been raised to be suspicious of vampires. Her arc is about questioning everything she’s been taught. The Bloodlines books have more internal conflict and slower romance pacing.
Both protagonists are well-drawn; readers who loved Rose’s energy sometimes find the adjustment to Sydney’s interiority takes a few books.
The Peacock TV Adaptation
The Peacock series Vampire Academy (2022–2023) followed the VA world with original storylines not closely adapted from the novels. It was cancelled after one season.
Richelle Mead has published other series — the Dark Swan series, the Georgina Kincaid series — which are adult paranormal romance rather than YA. Readers who age out of VA/Bloodlines often find these a natural progression.
Where to Start
Read Vampire Academy (Book 1) first. It’s a fast, entertaining YA paranormal novel that establishes the world efficiently. If the vampire world-building, the academy setting, and Rose’s voice work for you, the full twelve-book universe is waiting.
