Which Patricia Cornwell books do Seasons 1 and 2 of Scarpetta adapt?

Spoiler warning

Discussing the differences between books and their adaptations may reveal plot points for both.

The TV version of Scarpetta, based on Patricia Cornwell’s novels, doesn’t follow a one-book-per-season format. Instead, it pulls from different parts of the book series and weaves them into a single story.

Season 1

Season 1 draws from two very different points in the series: Postmortem (the first book) and Autopsy (a much later entry). Rather than adapting them separately, the show runs them side by side using dual timelines and different casts.

  • The Past: One timeline is set early in Scarpetta’s career, loosely based on Postmortem, and follows a serial killer case that helps shape her character.
  • The Present: The other is set in the present and draws from Autopsy, focusing on a new investigation that connects back to the past.

Season 2

Season 2, which has already been commissioned, follows the same approach. It combines the novels Cruel and Unusual and The Body Farm, again splitting the story between past and present timelines.

In short, each season blends two books and tells them in parallel rather than adapting them one at a time.
